Manage style of reports from one place?

Is it possible to maintain the style of all of my reports from one place,
say by using a style sheet or by applying a template?

Thanks for getting back to me with the link. It is useful but it doesn't
quite fit my requirements. The template approach helps when creating a new
report but what if you already have existing reports and you want to change
their look? It seems overly labourious to go in to every report and manually
change all the fonts, colours etc.
Thanks

something to parse the reports & apply in your fonts, colours etc. using
xpath. The report would have to be published as a new report, but you could
always delete the old one or move it to a new folder.
Obviously if all the reports are different layouts, then this technique
won't be so good as you'd end up writing a parser for each report!

do something like that.
I found an article since posting this question that said that stylesheets
are not supported in this version of reporting services but will be
introduced in a later version. I suppose you don't know which version that
would be?
Thanks.

Can i make a report from non sql-server data source ?
To be specific:
I have an xml data source, and i built the dataset from the xml,by VIsual

can i bound reporting services 2000 to this dataset as datasource?
if NO, can we do it in sql server Reporting Services 2005?

Make the series stand by themselves in stacked column graph

I'm making some reports that are made for getting printed. I currently have three groups of reports, each group having four charts (four A4 papers/group). To cut down on the sheer number of papers on the boards I've been asked to merge these charts so that we'll have all three groups in one chart. This works fine for three of the charts (two line charts and one column chart), where the results gets neatly organized in group order. Where I ran into problems was the last chart..

The last chart is a stacked column chart. With one group, it works quite well; the x-axis is by year/week, and for each week there's a bar where the lower part is "done" and the upper part is "failed".
Now when doing this graph with multiple groups (groups as series), it doesn't put the different groups beside each other as I would've wished, instead it piles them on top of each other as if it was a 100% stacked column.

So the question is; is there some way to make a stacked column graph with multiple series that are one stacked bar per group instead of having all of them stacked on top of each other? Am I just missing some small detail here? What you are observing is the nature of stacked charts--the values for each category are stacked on top of each other. Unfortunately, what you are looking for, having multiple stacked columns for the same category, is not possible.|||Can you do a column graph and have some bars as a single bar and other bars be stacked?

Make a Query in VB and pass to CR

Hello all, I'm new to this crystal reports mumbo-jumbo and need some help. Im using VB 6 and the crystal that comes with free with Visual Studio 6. I have to create a report, and I would like to be able to do it from my VB app. I have the user select some criteria from my app. I would then like to construct an SQL query based on that input and output a report. The SQL isnt the problem. I've searched the web for help, but the most help I got was finding out how to install CR and add it to my toolbox.

Where do I go from here? I figure I need to at least layout the report in CR, cause that won't be changing, only the data that goes in the report.

I know I'm asking a lot in this post, but I haven't been able to find answers anywhere else. If one of you gentelmen (or ladies?) could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it more than you could possibly know.

P.S. I'm using a FoxPro DB if that makes a diffrence. I'm connected with Jet driver.sql query : like only shown record with lastname = erick?
if it is u could use selection formula..

cRt.selectionformula = " lastname = '" & text1.text & "'"

regards|||Thats kind of what I'm looking for. What I have is a table that has some test information, test id, name, number of questions, etc. Then i have a test taker table that has all the ususal info, ie, name, ssn, ... and also the test they took. what I want to do is populate my report with only the test takers who scored above a certain number, who took the selected test. I know how to structure the query, but I don't know what to do with it once I have it. I saw there is a sqlquery property so i set it equal to my query, then showed my report, but nothing happend.|||cRt.selectionformula = " lastname = '" & text1.text & "'"

is "lastname" a field in the report?|||I tried something similar to what just got posted but nothing happend, my report didn't even print to the screen. I think that that might just add 1 record to the report, would I have to loop through an entire recordset to populate the report, or is there another way?|||There are 2 ways (that I know of) that you can do your query and get the results within VB, then pass only the data to Crystal Reports.

The first way is use ADO or RDO and pass the recordset to the report.

The second way is to use CDO (Crystal Data Objects) to pass the data to the report. With CDO, you populate an array with your data and stuff the array into a CDO Rowset (which is similar to an RDO resultset or an ADO Recordset).

Using either of these 2 methods, the only Crystal does is display the data.

For more info on CDO, see this link (http://www.dev-archive.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=281658&highlight=cdo)

Also, have a look at this (http://www.dev-archive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298564&highlight=rdc). It gives code on 2 different ways of passing the data to the report. (rsData would be an ADO recordset since that's what I use, but you can replace that with an RDO resultset or a CDO rowset)

I personally prefer to use CDO and the second method from the second post (called RDC), since it seems to give you more control (ie, with RDC you can move fields and rename column headers, etc, that are in the report.)

One last thing, keep in mind that I use Crystal Reports 8.5, so if you have a different version, you may not be able to use the code I have posted word-for-word.

And check out Crystal's Support Website (http://support.businessobjects.com/search/advsearch.asp) and Crystal's Suport Forum (http://support.businessobjects.com/forums/default.asp)|||is "lastname" a field in the report?
yes it is..that is the field that user want to retrieve..
text1.text is the value that user choose..is this case
filed (lastname) with value = erick
cRt is ur crystal report control name

would I have to loop through an entire recordset to populate the report, or is there another way?
u don't have to loop entire record..if the value that user enter is in the table then the report will shown..the other way maybe what malleyo do..right now i'm using the method above..

Make a folder available to everyone

What would be the easiest way to make all the reports in a
RS folder available to everybody who can access the Report
Server website, whether or not they have NT accounts?
JoeThere is not an easy and supported way to do this. You could turn on
anonymous access and give rights to the anonymous user, but then you
essentially have no security in your system. You could also look into
writing a custom auth dll that would provide such access, however this is
not trivial.

Make a Common Color Palette

What would be the best approach for having all the reports share a color palette.

What i want to achieve is that when we want to change for example the color of our column header i somewhere change a value and all reports are modified. That somewhere might be a config file, a sql table, a registerentry, ....

I know i could change all rdl files but that's nog a approach i want to develop.

Kinds Regards

Sorry, never checked the <expression> possibility.

I mean, i know the option but never thought that even color had this option. Great.

Btw, you may find the following article useful: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnsql90/html/MoreSSRSCharts.asp

It also contains an example about using custom color palettes.

maintenance plan reports delete backup file fail but deletes it ok

Hi
I have a sql 2000 sp4 maintenance plan that is set to delete old dbs
over 2 days old. In the maintenance plan history it reports this
activity failing for one db, but the Message section reports 1 file
deleted. The transaction log backup delete works ok and reports
correctly. Any ideas?
Kev
Hey Kev,
(Don'cha hate it when no one replies to your question?) :-)
Even though the History states failure, does the physical file actually get
deleted, though? I've seen several times the "work" gets done even though
sqlmaint (for some reason) has problems and fails. I've never really paid
much attention to the History, myself. Maybe I should. But I always
right-click on the job (if it show failure) and check the jobsteps. Then, I
check the output file created by the Plan's job (backup, optimization, etc.).
Could you send the few lines of output from both the History (may need to
manually type) and the Message section of the output? Manybe I can see
something from them.
Thanks

thanks for your reply.
this is the log file from the maint job :

End of maintenance plan 'MHA CareG1_SITE Mtnce plan' on 19/03/2007

yet the maintenance plan history records :
Db Activity Status
End date Message
MHACareG1_site Delete old db backups X 19/03/07 20:31
2 files deleted
so it appears to do exactly what it says, but still reports it as
failed.
I am going to set up a new maint plan for this db to a different
folder with exactly the same details
Kev
|||That is interesting, not to mention odd.
Question; What else does this Maint. Plan do besides the TLog backup?
The job output states that the job (or step?) begins @. 20:00:02 and finishes
@. 20:00:11 (Execution Time: 9 secs). BUT, the History record shows the End
date (time) as 20:31. What else occurred within those 31 minutes? A
Database Backup, or an Optimization perhaps? Maybe it was one of those that
actually failed. Or are there any other Steps within the same Job?

|||Hi Tj,
yes it does a db backup which works ok. The History record refers only
to the delete old files part of the job which ran at 20:31. All the
steps within the maint job are listed in the history as separate
activities, but only delete old files step fails.
Interestingly I set up the new job to run overnight, created 2 old
files in the destination folder, and everything worked ok.
Sometimes I guess its easier to just start again and forget it.
Cheers

Hi TJ
thanks for your reply.
this is the log file from the maint job :
Microsoft (R) SQLMaint Utility (Unicode), Version Logged on to SQL
Server 'MHA-SQL01\SQL01' as 'MHACAREGROUP\CLU01SQLSVC' (trusted)
Starting maintenance plan 'MHA CareG1_SITE Mtnce plan' on 19/03/2007
20:00:02
[1] Database MHACareG1_SITE: Transaction Log Backup...
Destination: [G:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL
$SQL01\BACKUP\MHACareG1_SITE\MHACareG1_SITE_tlog_200703192000.TRN]
** Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 9 secs **
[2] Database MHACareG1_SITE: Delete Old Backup Files...
2 file(s) deleted.
Deleting old text reports... 1 file(s) deleted.
End of maintenance plan 'MHA CareG1_SITE Mtnce plan' on 19/03/2007
20:00:11
SQLMAINT.EXE Process Exit Code: 0 (Success)
yet the maintenance plan history records :
Db Activity Status
End date Message
MHACareG1_site Delete old db backups X 19/03/07 20:31
2 files deleted
so it appears to do exactly what it says, but still reports it as
failed.
I am going to set up a new maint plan for this db to a different
folder with exactly the same details
Kev|||That is interesting, not to mention odd.
Or are there any other Steps within the same Job?

yes it does a db backup which works ok.
Cheers

maintenance plan reports delete backup file fail but deletes it ok

Hi
I have a sql 2000 sp4 maintenance plan that is set to delete old dbs
over 2 days old. In the maintenance plan history it reports this
activity failing for one db, but the Message section reports 1 file
deleted. The transaction log backup delete works ok and reports
correctly. Any ideas?
KevHey Kev,
(Don'cha hate it when no one replies to your question') :-)
Even though the History states failure, does the physical file actually get
deleted, though? I've seen several times the "work" gets done even though
sqlmaint (for some reason) has problems and fails. I've never really paid
much attention to the History, myself. Maybe I should. But I always
right-click on the job (if it show failure) and check the jobsteps. Then, I
check the output file created by the Plan's job (backup, optimization, etc.)
.
Could you send the few lines of output from both the History (may need to
manually type) and the Message section of the output? Manybe I can see
something from them.
Thanks

** Execution Time: 0 hrs, 0 mins, 9 secs **
[2] Database MHACareG1_SITE: Delete Old Backup Files...

End of maintenance plan 'MHA CareG1_SITE Mtnce plan' on 19/03/2007
