Managed Services?

Hello,
Does anyone know of any companies offering managed type services for SQL
Server?
Thanks in advance.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I may be thinking too hard or not enough, but what do you mean by managed
services?

Manage SQL 2000 services/network settings

Is there any way to manage services and network settings for SQL Server 2000 by SMO?

I need to start/stop services , change logon account, manage network protocols.

For SQL 2005 it can be easily done by using classes from SMO.Wmi namespace, as far as I see.

So what about 2000? Should I use DMO libraries and if so, how can I perform that tasks?

Alexander, SQL 2000 uses the Service Manager for setting the login account and start/stop services, so I'd think the same WMI functionality that allows you to manage services will work for the SQL 2000 service. As far as managing SQL Server 2000, it's fully supported in SMO.|||

As far as I see, sql 2000 instances cannot be managed by using Wmi provider.

For example,

(new ManagedComputer("myCompName")).Services

collection will not contain SQL 2000 services.

That's why I'm asking.)

Manage a data source for a report found in a SharePoint Document Library

I was working for 2 days on integrating reporting services with MOSS 2007.

The problem i faces was to create a data source for the

uploaded report (Not created using a wizard ) that will connect

me to the SQL server.

As i clicked on the arrow near the uploaded report to manage the data source, i found no

data source for this item.

I would be pleased to know the howto create this data source and where.

Best Regards,

Lana

Here are two recommended approaches to create a shared data source in MOSS 2007:
- Create one in the Report Designer and deploy it to the apprpriate SharePoint Document Library OR
- Add the "Report Data Source" content type from the Document Library Settings. Next, select the "Report Data Source" content type from the Document Library's "New" menu. Next, you should see a web page to create a shared data source.

Hope this helps.

thanx,
Prash

|||

Dear Prash,

I created the doc library that reads a data source

I uploaded a dataSource.rds but it was uploaded as hidden coz i

viewed the content of the doc in the Actions --> open with

explorer view.

Nevertheless, i created a new Report Data Source having the Data

Source Type as Microsoft SQL server but i didn't know what to insert in

theConnection string (Enter a connection string for accessing the report data source).

Although my connection string was empty, i clicked on my uploaded report to manage the data source but i found no data source for this item.

Thanks,

Lana

|||

Please note, that the .rds file is not the shared data source file in SharePoint. For details on creating Shared Data source Refer to SQL BOL topic "How to: Create and Manage Shared Data Sources (Reporting Services in SharePoint Integrated Mode) "

Have you tried deploying the shared data source and Report directly from the designer instead of manually uploading the file into SharePoint? If you manually upload a .rdl file with reference to a shared data source you will have to edit the reference once you have uploaded it to SharePoint via "Manage Data Sources". Generally, deploying the report and shared data source from the designer should preserve the reference from the report to the shared data source.

For details on connection string information refer to SQL BOL topic on "Connecting to a Data Source".

Hope this helps.

thanx,
Prash

Making use of RGDI output

According to the Reporting Services feature matrix, the image output that Report Server Express has is something called RGDI. From what I've gathered, RGDI stands for Remote GDI.

What is the RGDI file format useful for? I don't know the proper file extension to give the file, nor do I know what viewer can view it.

Is there some way to convert the RGDI format to a more universally accepted file format such as .tif, .gif, .jpg, etc...? I'm hoping that I can just capture the binary stream, and convert the stream to a different image format before saving the file.

Thanks!

RGDI is not useful in itself, it's only usable and used by the Winforms report controls in VS 2005.

Thanks
Tudor|||

So you are saying that RGDI isn't available via a call to the Render() web service method to Report Server Express?

In that case, is Report Server Express going to support calling Render with a format of "IMAGE" and return a .tif file? If not, does RS Express support rendering to any sort of image type? The .tif functionality seems pretty useful.

Thanks.

|||

RGDI is available, but it only works with the WinForms Report Control. It consists of serialized GDI calls, which are not generally useful. The Express Server supports EMF format for printing.

|||

Brian, I would like to save the results of a Render() in the RGDI format to later be opened using a winforms application that may not have access to our servers.

Is it possible to save the RGDI results and open them later with the ReportViewer in a disconnected environment?

Making Inegration Services visible/available in SSMS 2005

I have installed SQL Server Management Studio 2005 and have been
finding the equivalent of the Data Transfer Services in SQLServer
2000. I think I have worked out that it is in SQL Server Integration
Services but when I open File-New-Project I do not see the SQL Server
Integration Services there, though Help assumes that it is available
for selection when starting a new project..

How can I make it visible in the New Project window?

I have successfully used the import function so I think this means
that Inegration Services is there somewhere.

I would appreciate some advice,

Best wishes, John MorganJohn Morgan wrote:

I believe the place to work with Integrations Services is the
Business Intelligence Development Studio.

Opened it up and the VStudio installed templates for Integration

Making groups visible using Parameters

Hi everyone,

I am new to reporting services and really need some help..
Im trying to simply my requirement using this scenario: Lets say

I want to display Sales for the current year (i.e from the start of the year january to the month we are currently at). The next requirement is to group these sales, by Area , Region , Zone...

Top leve l = Zone , then Region then Area.

I need the user to be able to control this using a parameter (i.e User can select "View Area Level" or "View Region Level" or "View Zone level")

How can this best be achieved ?

My idea was using row groupings and controling visibility using the parameter.. The problem is.. If i want to view ONLY the area level and not see anything above, can I turn visibility off of the Zone and Region and still see the inner group (area)

Area Level (default view)

Jan Feb
Area 1 100 100
Area 2 200 200

Region Level Selected

Reagion 1
Area 1 100 100
Region 2
Area 2 200 200

Zone Level Select

Zone 1
Region 1
Area 1 100 100
Region 2
Area 2 200 200
Any help would REALLY be appreciated ..

Kind Regards,
Neil
http://blogs.msdn.com/chrishays/archive/2004/07/15/DynamicGrouping.aspx|||

Hello Neil,

I can think of a couple ways to do this, one way is having 2 boolean parameters. From the way you show in your example, it looks like the Area level will always show.

First, you'll need to create the 2 parameters as boolean type and set your defaults. For example: ShowRegion - False, ShowZone - False.

Click on the row handle for your Zone level and go to the Hidden setting in the Properties window.

Change the Hidden setting to an expression and enter this into it:

=Iif(Parameters!ShowZone.Value = True, False, True)

Click on the row handle for your Region level and change the Hidden setting to this expression:

=Iif(Parameters!ShowRegion.Value = True OR Parameters!ShowZone.Value = True, False, True)

Hope this helps.

|||Hey Jarret

Thanks so much for the reply, I have found away to do this, well In theory the idea works..
With regards to your idea.. I was thinking that If the parent group is made invisible so are the children groups (invisible).. well.. I dont know if that is the case.. If you know the answer please let me know..

Thanks for taking the time to help out.. really appreciate it Smile

Kind Regards,
Neil
|||

Hello,

If you hide a higher group (parent), the lower groups (children) will continue to show until explicitly hidden. They are independent of each other.

Jarret

Thanks!!

Making groups available

I'd like to get the sum of a row in a reporting services table. Unlike
summing columns which are easy, I'm told I need to create a group.
I create the group with the fields I want to sum. Then I right click on the
table cell I want to hold the sum value, and select expression. My table
column names are there, but not my group (which I need to sum my row).
When I create the group, I give it a name and add the fields I want to sum.
What else do I have to do to make the group available when I edit expressions?
Of course, if there's some aggregate functions that let's me sum a row
without a group, all the better.
Thanks

RandyHi Randy,
Welcome to the MSDN newsgroup.
Regarding on the "sum of a row in a reporting services table", do you mean
perform sum on all the columns in a single data row or still sum a certain
column , but restricted in a certain group?
If you're wantting to perform the sum on all the columns in a single row,
I'm afraid, the group or other filter can not help on this. You may need to
manually write the sum code in the expression of the textbox or certain
table cell. Also, since you'll perform sum on the columns, we need to make
sure all the columns are of number type.

Yes, I would like to sum all the columns in the row, and they are all type
int.
I have found the code window, and written a VB function to sum all the
columns. When I say Code.MySum(...) in the Edit Expression dialog box, MySum
is underlined in red and "not defined".
I've tried to just sum the columns in the edit expression dialog box. The
sum function provided only takes one parameter. I'd need an example or BOM
reference to see how to do this. At one point, someone suggested the Subtotal
function, but I couldn't find that in the available aggregate functions list.
If you could point me toward an article on writing functions for reporting
services under the Code tab or in the Edit Expression dialog box, that would
help a lot.
Thanks again,

IMO, if you just want to do sum on all the columns in a single row, you can
just put the sum code in the expression of the textbox( use + operator).
For example:
=Fields("col1").Value + Fields("col2").Value + Fields("col3").Value
For custom code in SSRS, you can have a look at the following web reference:
#Using Custom Code References in Expressions [Reporting Services]

#Chapter 5: Using Custom .Net Code with Reports

Hope this helps.

Make sure the application for the project type (.rptproj) is installed

Hi,

Till Some time back my SSRS SSIS services were working fine. I was able to create/open any project from the Business Intelligence Development Studio. That time only BI suite was installed in Visual Studio 2005.

But due to some other requirements , we had to installed Complete VS.NET 2005 on the same system. After the installation i am only able to create/open ASP.NET applications. All earlier Reporting and Integration project are giving error on opening. Even i a m not able to create a new SSRS or SSIS application.

Error Message says:

"The application for the project 'c:\documents and settings\....rtpproj' is not installed.

Make sure the application for the project type (.rptproj) is installed"

I remote login to this server to work on.

There is another thing, one of my colleague when he log in to this system using his ID, he is able to create new porjects. This is system is not a Terminal Server in true sense.

So What should be the solution for this?.

Installation/Reinstallation of Sql Server component or reinstallation of everything.

Or may be some better option.Pls your suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Make a Report from two different data source..

Hi,
I am trying to make a Report on SQL Server Reporting Services 2005.
Here I am facing a problem that is follows-
I have a two seprate database server Server1 and Server2 and from both
server have table1 on server1 and table2 on server2.
I just want to make a report to accessing a data from both server
tables. I dont know how can I make a Report through SSRS-2005.
Please help any one have idea..
This would be helpful for me.
Thanks,
Rahul.Any chance you could link the two SQL servers together? You cannot
run a single query against two individual servers unless they are
"aware" of each other, and linking is one way to do that.
You could set up individual datasets and perhaps link them together
using parameters, also.

Subreports work great for this sort of thing.

Hi Jerry,
Thanks a lot for reply.
Yes, If this is possible by linking the server then its Ok, but I dont
know the procedure to link the two server and after linking how I can
access the data from different database server through the query?
Please can you help me out to solve this report.
Thanks you for your support,

Hi Bruce,
Thank you very much for your response,
Please could you give me the idea how can I achieve the target report
through subreports.
I dont know how can I made a subreports in RS when the data are coming
from different database server.
Thank you,
Rahul.|||You can have multiple data sources. Each dataset comes from a single data
source. So, if you have a master-detail type report you have the main report
with a dataset going to one server and then a subreport (which is just a
regular report with a parameter) to the other. You drag and drop the
subreport onto the main report, right mouse click, parameters and map the
parameter of the subreport to a field of the main report.
For master - detail reports, regardless of where the data is coming from)
that is how you design a report.
Note about linked servers. This is a SQL Server thing and advanced in my
book. The reason I feel that way is that if you try to do a join using lined
servers you can end up downloading the complete remote table. Fine if the
table is small but not so fine if there is any size whatsoever.

Make 2 or 1

Our company has its Departments And Services.

Now We are making it online.

Both have separate email list, phone numbers, and more.

Will I make one table and adds the field Type (Values: D or S).

Or make them separate.

Remember one thing If we merge them then Email And PhoneNumber Table will also me merge

other wise they will also separate.

What is better.

You should definitely separate these two tables!

Can a service belong to more than one department?

If the answer is yes, you will also need a third table that connects a department with one or more services. You can then use JOIN between these three tables to get a complete list of departments and services.

If the answer is no, then you can put a foreign key in the service table that links directly to a department.

Let us know if you need more assistance!

|||

Yes you are right.

I secondly ask that PhoneNumber or Email Table are Same in nature for Department and Service both.

Will we make PhoneNumber or Email Table separate for PhoneNumber or Email Table.

Table list

Department

DepartmentEmail

Service

ServiceEmail

Is it right?

|||

Well, that doesn't really make any sense if you only have "unique" departments and "unique" services stored, right?

The thing we are discussing here is called normalization, and it's all about reducing duplicate information. So if you don't have duplicate services or duplicate departments, then there's no need to break out email/phone in a separate table.

|||

I think you you don't understand my point.

Multiple EmailAddress and PhoneNumbers per department or service is allowed.

I have a table Department.

And one Department can have multiple Email.

On the other end I have a table Service

Which also can have multiple Email.

-------

Department

-------

Id

Name

-------

-------

Service

-------

Id

Name

-------

Now I have to make Email Tables

And I think the table structure will.

-------

EmailDepartment

-------

Id

Address

DepartmentId

-------

-------

EmailService

-------

Id

Address

DepartmentId

-------

This one is O.k.

or you suggest something else.

|||

Johram we can have multiple email addresses per department.

|||

Johram we can have multiple email addresses per department.

|||

Yes, if you can have multiple e-mail addresses then you are on the right track, dividing it further in email tables!

|||

Sir, I think you understand all the story.

One last thing I am asking from you.

Bascially Question is that dividing Email Tables according to Department And Service Table

has been done by different ways.

One is that

Make separate Email Table for Department and Service Table Named EmailDepartment And EmailService.

I share this with my one professional.

He said not do that.

Make one Email table

And add a column name type in which take D for Department and S for Service

And add one more column of Id in which take the DepartmentId And ServiceId.

I am confused what to choose.

Waiting for your kind help.

Problem is that if you want to use real constraints in the database (Foreign key checks) then this solution is not viable, because you need to express the relationship from the Email table to either Services or Departments, you cannot have both. There is no simple solution to this problem, unless you want to introduce an extra table above Services and Departments (think of it as inheritance), which you could then point your emails at.

However, for this purpose it might be sufficient to skip constraints and don't use foreign keys at all in the Email table. The solution your colleague suggested is a common solution. Database purists would not like it (since constraints cannot be used in a simple manner), but for this purpose it will work well.

Sidenote: It is possible (in some databases) to create insert rules to assure that the reference id inserted in the Email table refers to a valid Service or Department, even if you don't have a FK relationship.

Good luck!

|||

Johram Please tell me what is good. Either 2 sparte email table is good or not.

I need the professional solution not the temporary.

If you have one in your mind.

Please reply. This will really help me.

Currently just becauase of that my work is stop.

|||

Then I suggest you go for two Email tables. It is a more pure solution, and it will be easier for you to use. Good luck!

|||

Yes you are right that is better.

But I have one more idea.

Assume.

We have Department Table with Id And Name Fields.

And Service Table with Id And Name Fields.

Make One Email Table with Id And EmailAddress Fields.

Now Make 2 Tables

DepartmentEmail with DepartmentId And EmailId Fields

And ServiceEmail with ServiceId And EmailId Fields

In comparision with this and old which you prefer in last post what do you prefer now?

Waiting for your reply.

Well, there's really no wrong or right in this case. The previous solution is simpler to implement (less joins). Although this suggestion (having an Email table) is probably the most normalized solution of all. But having a table with only one id and a string could be considered unnecessary.

Hmmm... how should I explain this. If you have a table with employees, something that you could build a relation to in many situations (salaries, bookings, reports etc) then it would be good to have a id, name table. That way, you could for instance have a combo of employees that you choose from, and so on.

But email is just a value, a property of an address. If you always have 1:1 (one to one) relations between Departments and its email and Services and its email, then I think you should have go for the previous solition (having the email field inline). But if you can see that the same email could be used in many situations then you could maybe consider having a separate Email table containing only id and name.

Hmmm... Wonder if this made things any clearer for you.

If I were you, I would settle with DepartmentEmail (DepartmentId, Email) rather than (DepartmentId, EmailId).

Major Problems with Calculated Fields

Is anyone else having problems with Calculated Members? Everything was working fine with viewing the cubes in the browser, in Reporting Services, and via Pivot tables...but once I put in some simple calculated members (simple parallel period functions), query times are extremely slow, everything locks up,unexpected Visual Studio crashes occur...SSAS pretty much becomes unusable.

Anyone with similar experiences?

You should see some performance improvements in SP1.

In limited number of cases you can use NON_EMPTY_BEHAVIOR when defining you calculated member. You got to be careful with it for parallel period such that you might not have a value for certain measure in parallel period. But if you can guarantee that, you should see way better performance.

Hope that helps.

Edward.

Do you know if this is a problem with SSAS, Reporting Services, or the OLAP 9.0 Provider? I seem to be having the same problem when using Reporting Services 2000 and the 9.0 Provider. If I can't report on SSAS 2005 easily, I simply can't upgrade until the issues are resolved.

Major flaw with Reporting Services!

There seems to be a major flaw with Reporting Services that will give huge problems. RS can't support subreports when it is generated in Excel. As you know all reporting, almost all of them are dumped in Excel format. I really hope someone fix this huge flaw to this software. I wouldn't recommend RS to anyone if I have known about this problem earlier. This problem is huge, for me at least 75% of the problem.

Do you know when patch or fix or whatever will be available so people can generate subreports in excel? I would really hope Microsoft put out just a patch, instead of a release so that it will be available soon to everyone. This is crazy!

Enkh.

Sub reports have a limititation in Excel of not working in a Table or Matrix. However, they will work in a list or a non data region.|||

I would really hope that you guys fix this problem, because this problem is huge since a lot of people usually generate reports in excel and fix the problem and send it when they don't have a lot of time. You can't do that with PDF reports.

Just to give you a little suggestion and information and I think you can bring this up in the needed RFE to RS next version when you guys go over RS in your usual meetings..

1. Make sub-reports function flawlesly in Excel whether it is in table or matrix or whatever.

2. I think event management is really needed in Reporting Services. Active Reports has events like "on report start", "on report end", "on fetch data" etc that users can write codes and those get executed depending on the function and event that is in. This is really useful when manipulating data greatly. This is very very very needed.

3. There seems to be a huge problem with how layout of the report is handled. For example when a table is not getting rendered on a certain page, it's header is not getting displayed on that page. I think there should be absolute setting of headers on all pages that doesn't depend on a whether table or anything is on the page.

Let me know if you have questions, I would be glad to help you guys about this RS feature enhancement. I create fairly complicated reports in RS.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Enkh.

|||I fail to see the significance of exporting reports to Excel. Report consumers frequently ask for the ability to export to excel - as excel is the tool that allows them to feel they are still in charge. However after years I have yet to see anyone do anything intelligent with the report output once they get it to excel.

Do your users do something intelligent with Excel Output?|||I have created several reports that have many subreports in them. Everything exports to Excel fine for me.|||

Yes it will export fine for reports with subreports not in a table or matrix. Once you put a subreport in a Table or Matrix, the export to Excel doesn't work saying it is ignoring the cell in the subreports. I don't think it knows how to create cells in Excel when subreport is in a Table. My main use of subreports this way is that one information in the main report needs to have multiple information handled in a subreport. I can't really do that all the time through just one query, so I have to create a second query to get a bunch of info. for the main record, and the advantage of Table or Matrix is that it can loop through the dataset, so the subreport has to be in the detail section so that it can loop with the main database record.

I hope I made it clear. Let me know if you have questions and we probably we can exchange ideas.

Enkh.

|||

Yes definitely, they need an instant edit access to the report so that when there is no time to correct the information in the database on the data (find the bug), they will have to change the values in the report themselves once.

Enkh.

|||

Enkht,

Can you give me an example of when you would want to have a report that does not reflect the actual state of the data? While I understand pen and ink changes, I think that this capability could become a real Pandora's box of trouble.
