manage the MSDE with command tool

i an newbie to MSDE, but i have experience Mysql before, can someone tell me how can i find help to manage MSDE with commands ??http://www.asp.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?tabindex=1&PostID=631069

This pinned post at the top of this forum talks about one possible tool.|||sorry man, i think you misunderstood my question, actually i want to use command to manage MSDE.|||Do you mean you want to manage MSDE from the command prompt? If so then you are talking about osql. SeeHow To Manage the SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) by Using the Osql Utility

Terri|||thank for that,
by the way i found that my MSDE is unbeliveable slow, like you have to take a minute to show all the database in the MSDE(from command line), why it is so slow??|||Which command are you using to list the databases?

Terri|||exec sp_database
also when i use sql web data administrator is even more slower than command, it's like take 2 minutes to login, and 3 minutes to go to the query section.
i have no ideas what cause this

Manage MSDE databases with SSMS?

We have an XP workstation containing a very important MSDE-based
application. Its MSDE database isn't likely to change for quite a
while.
The app contains an internal backup method (File, Backup, Backup) and
an auxiliary app/script for shrinking the database and logs. I would
like to automate the backup and shrinking so end users don't have to
remember to do them.
The workstation has a static IP so it can go out to the Internet when
necessary. The workstation is presently not joined to the domain.
1. Can I install SSMS Express *only* as a local app (without SQL
Express 2005) and thus use SSMS to set up nightly backups and periodic
shrink database/logs jobs?
2. We have SSMS running on SQL 2005 server box in the domain. If I
join the workstation only to the domain (local account logon is not
changed, still used), could I use SSMS from the SQL 2005 box? Would I
need a domain login on the XP box to make this work?
Thank you, Tom
I stand corrected...I know one is not supposed to double-post.
I found this NG after I had posted to the other groups, and I could
not figure out how active the other two groups are, and this NG had
more past posts about SSMS/MSDE than the other groups, so it seemed
appropriate to also inquire here.
Thank you, Tom

the post appears in all of them as does the replies. He wasn't suggesting

Since tlyczko seems to have found this group after his first post, that
appears a little difficult to do. But he could have had some patience
before he tried this forum.
I saw that tlyczko had another question about activity in
comp.databases.ms-sqlserver this morning. It seems to me that while
comp.databases.ms-sqlserver has a fairly low traffic, it still more active
than the .tools newsgroup, which is kind of funny. But many tools questions
are asked in the "big" groups .programming and .server. It appears that
Microsoft has been a bit over-zealous when set up the various sets of
groups.
And I should explain the reason double-posting is bad, is that it could
lead to people wasting time on answering a question that already has a good
answer elsewhere.

An indirect bad effect - I encourage customers to search

where it was actually answered.

Making our SQL Server 2000 application ready for SQL Server 2005

We have several applications that were developed using SQL Server 2000. Most of our customers run MSDE, some the full SQL Server 2000. We are in the process of making sure our applications will work properly in SQL Server 2005 / SQL Express.

I have a few questions regarding this issue:-

1. Should I set the compatibility level to 80 for our databases or should I aim to make our applications work the 90 compatibility level?

I've run the Upgrade Advisor against our databases and this has not flagged up any issues. Does this mean the databases are compliant with the 90 compatibility level.

Of course this hasn't verified the queries built into my VB application so presumably I need to test our applications thoroughly before we let our customers run them on SQL Server 2005? (Note: Our newest applications do approx. 95% of the queries through stored procedures, however our older applications are more like 50% - this I presume potentially means there are a lot of queries hard coded into our code that could potentially not work and we need to test the applications directly against SQL Server 2005?)

2. If the compatibility level is set to 80, does the guarantee the database functions EXACTLY the same as SQL Server 2000? Could anything not work that did work in SQL Server 2000? Note: I know the SQL Agent Service is not available in SQL Express - this is not my main concern - i'm more on about general stuff like queries etc here.

3. If the compatibility level is set to 80 do you still get some SQL Server 2005 benefits - e.g. running on a faster engine giving me performance benefits or does the database need to be set to compatibility level 90 to receive any performance benefits?

4. If you restore a SQL Server 2000 database into SQL Server 2005, does it automatically update the database so it no longer will work in SQL Server 2000? Can I for instance have the database set to compatibility level 80 with nothing upgraded and then restore the database back on a SQL Server 2000 machine. I don't believe this is possible, but need to check.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

2&3 Check out this link and "Behavioral Differences Between Earlier Compatibility Levels and Level 90"
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178653.aspx

In this link it states..

"The sp_dbcmptlevel stored procedure affects behaviors only for the specified database, not for the entire server. sp_dbcmptlevel provides only partial backward compatibility with earlier versions of SQL Server. Use sp_dbcmptlevel as an interim migration aid to work around version differences in the behaviors that are controlled by the relevant compatibility level setting. If existing SQL Server applications are affected by behavioral differences in SQL Server 2005, convert the application to work properly. Then use sp_dbcmptlevel to change the compatibility level to 90."

The above text implies compatibility levels should be used just as an aid until our application is fixed. I've read a lot of the upgrade advisor help file and can't see anything in there that our application would have trouble with.

Therefore, If i've run the upgrade advisor and I have no issues (and I can't see anything in the help file that would cause us problems) then presumably the next step is to restore our databases in SQL Server 2005 and change the compatibility level to 90 and start testing our applications directly?

|||There are noguarantees! :)
In your place I would check whether I am aware of any points detailed in the above link that would impede your applications functionality or performance.
I'd then restore the database in SQL 2005 and start testing, if I hit issues that might be compability related, then I'd drop the compatability level to try to resolve them.sql

Making an MSDE DB with Access

Hi
I'm trying to create an MSDE database, and I don't have SQL Server
installed. Do i need to have SQL Server installed to create and run the MSDE
database? I thought the whole idea of MSDE was so you don't need SQL server
to create it or run, while only being limited to DB size and limited
concurrent use.
Can anyone shed light on the situation. I seem to be going round and round
in circles regarding this issue on the Microsoft website.
Thanks
Taniel
Simply put MSDE is a scaled down version of SQL Server. There is a size
limit to the MSDE database size and some of the high end features of SQL
Server are not available to the MSDE users. Other than that MSDE users have
all the functionality of SQL Server at their disposal.
If you have MSDE up and running you do not need SQL Server unless you want
to use restricted high end features.

Making a User in MSDE

I want to make a user ho have the same rights as the SA user.

I have tried to use

Sp_addlogin
and sp_grantdbaccess

I have got a new user but i have only access to master DB. I can use
sp_grantdbaccess to every database.

Inn this case i have about 100 different databases i need to have
access to. is't a way to give a user "administrator" rights to every
database?"Eirik Kongsvik" <eirik@.jdata.no> wrote in message

To give another login the same rights as sa, you can add them to the
sysadmin server role:

exec sp_addsrvrolemember 'MyLogin', 'sysadmin'

Don't forget that sysadmins can do anything in SQL Server - if you want to
make a login db_owner for each database, then you will need to loop through
the databases, granting access to each one, then adding the user to the
db_owner database role.

making a report

how can i create a report for my database? how can i create bar graphs, etc.? im using msde and sql express. pls help. thanks.

MSDE and SQL Express are both free, and neither comes with any reporting tools, AFAIK. SQL Server may, I'm not sure, but the most likely way I would go about doing this is to write a program which reads the database, and then creates a graph from the data. There are free and commercial graphing tools about, but basic graphs are pretty easy to draw in code.

|||What you want is reporting services, but this only comes with the licensed sql server (2000 and 2005) versions which you have to pay for. However, you can create an ODBC link to a sql server database in excel, and produce the required reports there for free!

Making a new ms access project

I'm having trouble making a new ms access project.
MSDE is running.
I run the wizard and it asks for a user name and password for the new
database. I put in sa and leave the password blank. Then I get an error
message.
What should I do?
Thanks.
Also, do the tables actually reside on in the sql file and the project
links to them? Where is there a tutorial on this?
Thanks again.
I found out the the Symantec Personal Firewall was blocking this.
Which program do I need to have it allow to have access? Ms Access?
Thanks.

Making a copy of an SQL 7 database into an MSDE environment

We have developed an application for Small Business
Server (SQL) on a system that is running MSDE. All
programming and testing was conducted on a remote,
standalone system, and when completed, we were able to
move appropriate copies to the LAN via an external 80GB
Western Digital USB attached portable drive.
Is it possible to copy one or more or the SQL databases
(all tables) from the SBS SQL server to an MSDE system?
(ie a network attached laptop).
I would appreciate your assistance and comments.

as you can't use DTS to manage MSDE instances (and more you say that your
SQL Server is a version 7.0 server), you have to rely on backup/restore
and/or sp_detach_db/sp_attach_db solutions
please keep in mind you will probably experiencing orphaned users problems
after that operation(s), you can resolve using system stored procedure
sp_change_users_login
(http://www.sqlservercentral.com/colu...okenlogins.asp)
you can move users databases this way only from 7.0 version to 2000 version,
and not vice versa

Maintenence plan backup schedule doesnt work

I am running the latest MSDE with the SQL Server 2000 client tools onWindows 2K Server on my production server. I have a simliar setup on mydevelopment machine except it is running Windows 2K (non-server). Ihave the same issue on both machines (I am wondering if it is relatedto the structure of the database). When I open Enterprise Manager, connect to the server, navigate to the Management folder, and add a newmanagement plan, I experience the following error.
I create a management plan that includes nothing but a completedatabase backup (i.e. no reorganization of index pages, logging, etc.).I set the backup schedule to occur every Sun at 12:00AM and hit OK.Sometimes I get the following error :"Error 8114: Error converting datatype int to tinyint" sometimes not. Either way, though, the same thinghappens, the schedule for the backup is not saved. If I reopen themanagement plan and go to the "Complete Backup" tab, there is noschedule in the schedule box.
I have found this link:
http://www.technologyone.org/new-4581847-3733.html
Which appears to be the same issue that I am having, however, there isno resolution there. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
Jason
just a quick dirty question: can you perform a normal backup? Is there a job for the backup? If so will this force run?|||Yes, I can perform manual backups without a problem. And, in fact, I can successfully create a maintenence plan withschedules for things like "Index pages" etc. And these schedules worksuccessfully. However, I am only interested in making a maintenenceplan for complete backups on a schedule and that does not work. Oneworkaround that would probably work is to just use the SQL ServerBackup dialog and set a schedule in there. However, this does not allowme the flexibility I require to manage the backups, such as saving thefiles with their dates appended and triaging the backups into seperatefolders for each database. It also does not allow any extensibility fordown the line when I would like to automate the cleaning andoptimization tasks as well as logging. Finally, I think I should alsomention, that I do have SQL Server Agent running, because this isrequired for the schedules to work correctly.
Jason
|||Have you thought of writing back-up scripts for these processes. Thesecould then be controlled by DTS or if you really have to xp_cmdshell?
|||I have thought about it, but have decided that my efforts are betterspent getting the maintenence plan working for several reasons. Firstoff, all I need is a basic backup and I do not require the flexibilitythat custom scripts would provide (nor do I need the overhead ofmaintaining said scripts). Lastly, the maintenance plan SHOULD work, Ijust have to figure out why it is not working rather than determining aworkaround.
Jason

ok, just is case you do want a script here's one you could use.

Maintenance Plans on MSDE

Hi NG,
I've defined a job and a maintenance plan on my SQL-Server. The target
system is using MSDE. I could see that the job was created, but with the
Enterprise Manager I cannot see that there is a folder 'Database Maintenance
Plans' under folder 'Management'.
Does anybody know if Maintenance plans are generally possible under MSDE, or
is there something missing on my target system where MSDE is installed.
Thanks for support, rene

Maintenance Plans are supported, but you do not have a graphical tool to
manage them, and have to rely on xp_sqlmaint system extended stored
