Manage changes in SQL object.

1. How do I manage changes in SQL Server objects? Not schema.

SQL Server does not have built-in version control. so can we manage or not.

Use an external source control provider to store the sql server object scripts in.|||

Help me understand what you mean by

SQL Server objects? Not schema

SQL Server objects ARE schema...

|||

Hi Arnie,

I have many databse.

Schema means- like procedure or function etc.

I want to use data in VSS not schema.

|||

VSS is typically NOT for data. VSS is source control for schema objects, i.e., table definitions, view definitions, stored procedure and function code, etc. In other words, source control for the schema objects source code.

If you want a tool to manage data, then perhaps you should examine some of the third party products that will be able to compare databases and provide you reports and scripts about the differences in data.

Make the Login box go away!

I'm trying to incorporate the /ReportServer virtual into our application web
site so we can point the Report Viewer control to /ReportServer rather than
<default web site's IP>/ReportServer. I'm trying to remove authentication
from <app>/ReportServer, but I've been unable to keep it from popping up
that blasted login dialog box. I've briefly tried using the FormsAuth
sample and even rewrote it to always return True from all the authentication
functions, but neither solved my problem.
The application is under Forms Auth. I just want the ReportServer virtual
to run in that context. At this point, I don't even care if it's really
keeping authentication or just letting anyone who happens to type in
http://<our_app>/ReportServer go uncontested. It's extremely frustrating,
and it doesn't work for any users as it is now.
This is SQL Server Standard, so I don't know if custom security extensions
(assuming I really had any clue as to how they worked or how to set them up)
would even work (I came across a page that says only Enterprise supports
them).To my knowledge, for IE to give your windows authentication credentials
automatically to IIS, you have to adresse the website using a machine name.
Use something like http://computername/ReportServer
Suppose your server is named BigBox.leetdomain.com
Address it using http://BigBox/ReportServer
I never had to mess around with the report server security as we want
windows authentication and the report server will not be used externally. It
seems to be configured fine by default.

restore to default non-forms-authentication settings.
Basically, it's not recommended since you'll have to re-do your report
permissions. And if you don't have the original .config files backed up,
you'll have a VERY difficult time.

1. Generating the report on the server side of the application by using the
Render SOAP API. The advantage of this approach is that it is more secure
since the user doesn't see the report URL (everything takes place on the
server). The tradeoff is that the interactive features (drilldown,
drillthrough, etc.) will not work with SOAP since their require direct
access to the Report Server by URL. If you decide to take this approach, you
can pass the web app identity to the Report Server and grant a minimum set
of permissions in RS to this account.
2. Replace the RS Windows security with Forms Authentication by writing a
custom security extension. This will allow you to incorporate interactive
features in your reports. In this scenario, the reports will be requested on
the client side of the application (e.g. by using the Report Viewer sample
control). If you decide to take this approach check out the sample security
extension from MS at
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/?url=/library/en-us/dnsql2k/html/ufairs.a
sp?frame=true#ufairs_topic3).
So, you have to carefully weight out your requirements for security,
reporting features and your application architecture to determine the best
integration scenario.

Major Problem!...Multiple user connection problem in reporting service 2000 with SOAP

Hi Everyone,

I am having a big problem here.

I am using Reporting Service 2000 and Visual Studio 2005. I have developed a custom web control which communicates with reporting web service and displays report. I pass username, password and domain information as network credential for communicating with report server (report server is remote). This is a web application in which users can see reports on the web page which uses my custom web control.

Everything works fine when there is single user. But when another user logs onto website and tries to access same or different report it seems like connection of the first user gets lost. And everything crashes for first user and for second user it works fine.

In fact if second user is accessing the same report then first user can see second user's report information which is no at all acceptable. I am sure that there should be some way so that multiple users can communicate with reporting server programmatically at the same time. Microsoft wouldn't make reporting web service so that only one user can access report at a time, would they?

Can anyone help me with this problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your users are being identified as the same person which would suggest annonymous access is being used or your web control is passing the same credentials for both users. I'm not sure how you've coded it or whether you are doing any caching or storing session state somewhere.

You have to narrow down what is at fault here. I would suggest the following:

Set your report server and report manager virtual directories to integrated or basic authentication and have 2 separate users access report manager at the same time|||

Thanks Adam for quick reply.

I don't have anonymous access enabled. I am using integrated windows authentication. Earlier i was trying to authenticate all users with one administartor credentials to communicate with Reporting web service. But then i changed my code so that it takes individual user's credentials. But this didn't make any difference.

I read in one reporting service book that Report server overwrites SessionID member after each call to the Render method. Therefore, two subsequent report requests will share same sessions only if they ask for the same report (assuming that the parameter set is same)

For example, let's say you run report A, then report B, and then report A again. When report B is rendered, its session identifier will overwrite the previous session identifier, which means that you will lose report A's session identifier. When report A is run again, even if the parameter set is the same, its execution will create a new report session and IsNewExecution will return true.

So i think this overwriting of SessionID by report server is causing the problem. But i don't know yet how to program so that it maintains proper SessionID for each user and hence doesn't crash for any user.

If anyone has any idea for solving this problem then please let me know. Thanks in advance.

|||Figured out. It was bug in my code. Accidentlly i had declared Parameter property as static in my code and because of that one user's report was using other user's property and which was making program crash. Thanks for reply though.

Major problem with @@IDENTITY, Treeview and GUID

Hi,

I'm trying to insert data into locally stored database (SQL Server).
The data I want inserted, is presented in a Treeview control and the data is fetched from a Webservice. The data is returned in form of a dataset.
The treeview contains checkboxes allowing a user to select what to install in the locally stored database.

To sum up:

1. Get data from a webservice' not my problem
2. Present data in a Treview control' not my problem
3. Allow to user to select which data to install' not my problem
4. Insert data that the user has selected into my db' MY PROBLEM!!!!

The Treeview looks like this.

- Group1
| | -- Rule1.1
| | -- Rule1.2
|
- Group2
| | -- Rule2.1
| | -- Rule2.2
| | -- Rule2.3

....

The Treeview is generated with DataRelations between Group and Rule.

My locally stored database is designed by a third party provider and therefore the database must not be altered.
The table I want to store data in is called "Groups" and it looks like this:

GroupID uniqueidentifier ' (newid())
GroupName nvarchar(50)
ParentGroupID uniqueidentifier' if grouptype = 0 then ParentGroupID must have a value.
GroupType tinyint ' 0 = subgroup, 1 = "top"group

Data in the table "Groups" would look like this:

GroupID GroupNameParentGroupIDGroupType
------------------
{000001...}Group1<NULL>1
{000011...}Rule1.1{000001...}0
{000012...}Rule1.2{000001...}0
{000002...}Group2<NULL>1
{000021...}Rule2.1{000002...}0
{000022...}Rule2.2{000002...}0
{000023...}Rule2.3{000002...}0

The third party also created a stored procedure called pr_AddGroup taking the following parameters:

@.GroupName ' can be both the RuleName and the GroupName
@.GroupType ' can be 0 for subgroup or 1 for "top"group
@.ParentGroup ' GUID

The problem with this stored procedure is that it does not have return value, which is here my problem actually lies.
If it returned @.@.IDENTITY I could use this as the parameter for @.ParentGroup.
Instead I figure I must create two sqlCommand's (one calling pr_AddGroup and another calling SELECT @.@.IDENTITY to get the newly created record).

My SQL Commands look like this

Dim cmd As SqlCommand
Dim Conn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection
Conn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=myServer;Initial Catalog=myTable;Integrated Security=SSPI"
cmd = New SqlCommand
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
cmd.Connection = Conn
cmd.CommandText = "pr_AddGroup"

cmd.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@.GroupName", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 50, ParameterDirection.Input))
cmd.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@.GroupType", SqlDbType.TinyInt, ParameterDirection.Input))
cmd.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@.ParentGroup", SqlDbType.UniqueIdentifier, ParameterDirection.Input))

dim cmd2 as SqlCommand
cmd2 = new SqlCommand
cmd2.commandtype = commandtype.Text
cmd2.commandtext = "SELECT @.@.IDENTITY as ID FROM Groups"
cmd2.connection = Conn

dim ParentGroupGUID as system.guid

To get the data inserted in the Groups table I would something like the following, but the code is very ugly
(and it doesn't work either);

For Each Group In TreeView1.Nodes ' Loop through Groups
If Group.Checked Then
cmd.Parameters("@.GroupName").Value = Group.Text.ToString
cmd.Parameters("@.GroupType").Value = 1

cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
ParentGroupGUID = cmd2.executescalar()

End If

For Each Rule In Group.Nodes ' Loop through Rules.
If Rule.Checked Then
cmd.Parameters("@.GroupName").Value = Group.Text.ToString
cmd.Parameters("@.GroupType").Value = 1
cmd.Parameters("@.ParentGroup").value = ParentGroupGUID
cmd.ExecuteNonquery()
End If
Next
Next

I've spent the last 5 hours figuring out this problem, so ANY help is appreciated :-)I'd recommend getting the stored proc changes because the time gap between running the stored proc and the select stmt can return a wrong ID for multiple users. So to main integrity of the stored proc and the ID its best to add the select stmt inside the stored proc itself. Also use SCOPE_IDENTITY() instead of @.@.IDENTITY.

hth|||Hi ndinakar,

Thanks for replying - but what do mean by:
"I'd recommend getting the stored proc changes"

I'm not allowed to change the stored proc because it's provided by a third party and if I modify the stored proc, the third party application is likely to break (and I don't wanna risk this).

??|||I meant the change be made in the stored proc it self to get accurate results. Even if you make a call to the table to return the latest Id there is no guratantee you would get the id for the isnert you did. if there are 5 ppl doing the insert at the same time the id's returned could get mixed up. so if you need to get the accurate id that was generated due to your insert..do the select immediately after the insert IN the stored proc itself. you need to xplain to the third party people and sort it out with them. else take the risk of not getting the right value.

Major Multiple connection problem RS2000 with SOAP

I am sure that should be some way so that multiple users can communicate with reporting server programmatically at the same time. Microsoft wouldn't make reporting web service so that only one user can access report at a time, would they?

Can anyone help me with this problem? ANyhelp will be greatly appreciated.
